‘La Crau’ is regarded as Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s greatest cru, and when produced at the hands of Vieux Télégraphe, it really doesn’t get much better. 1992 was a better vintage than the lackluster 1991, and the wine is at its peak now. Drink now with robust French dishes.
Producer note: Vieux Télégraphe is regarded as one of the most important producers in the Southern Rhône. The estate has been headed by the Brunier family for over 100 years, who from the start, have been strong pioneers of Grenache. ‘La Crau’ is considered to be Chateauneuf-du-Pape’s most esteemed ‘grand cru’ and is located at the extreme southeast tip of the appellation. The vineyard is characterized by layered alluvial soils, most notably dotted with galet stones at the surface level. These special rocks help insulate vines from extreme weather conditions, as well as provide optimal drainage for the roots. This bottle is an absolute must for any reputable cellar.
