Chateau Moulin Pey-Labrie Canon Fronsac 1988

This Merlot-dominant (95%) blend from Moulin Pey-Labrie is one for the books. This is the only wine that the estate makes, and 1988 was the first vintage that Bénédicte and Grégoire Hubau produced. Fruit is hand-harvested, destemmed, and naturally fermented in steel-lined concrete tanks, with punchdowns executed regularly. The wine is then aged for 18 months in barriques (30-50% new). Now with 30+ years on it, the wine is absolutely singing. Tertiary notes of stewed red fruits, tobacco, and sweet spice lead to an herbaceous, slightly vegetal finish. Pop this savory bottle now and enjoy.
