Region/Appellation - Sancerre
Located on the far east side of the Loire Valley, Sancerre is best known for its acid-driven white wine and crisp rosé wine production, made from Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, respectively. These wines are known for their pronounced aromatics and signature smoky, chalk-driven undertones, which come from the region’s unique combination of Kimmeridgian, limestone, and silex (flint) soils. The appellation of Sancerre stretches 15 miles along the west bank of the Loire Valley and is home to 2,800+ hectares of vines. The appellation is located just 50 miles away from Burgundy’s northerly Chablis appellation, where distinct pockets of Kimmeridgian soils also dominate the land. Sancerre officially became a designated appellation in 1936, making it one of the first recognized growing regions in France. 

Behind the Bottle
Domaine Bailly-Reverdy is located in the village of Bué, just three miles from the town of Sancerre. The estate was officially established in 1956 and is now headed by the family’s third-generation, Aurélien. After studying in Beaune and Montpellier, Aurélien garnered work experience abroad in New Zealand and the USA. His global perspective has brought a breath of fresh air to the estate’s production, all of which is dedicated to sustainably-farmed Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. 

Serving Situation
They say what grows together goes together, and in the case of Pinot Noir-based rosés from Sancerre, we couldn’t agree more. In addition to top-notch wine production, this famed French region is known for its duck rillettes, fresh goat cheese, and fouaces (bread pocket turnovers stuffed with cheese, butter, or paté). Any of these would make snacks would be delightful with Bailly-Reverdy’s rosé.
